Always loved this one.  And my wife loved it too, because she is an exceptionally logical person.

This is the reason I quit my last job.

I found this video while at my last job - a software company run by 3 brothers who didn’t understand software at all. I’ve totally been called the “expert” in the room while having to gently explain to everyone there why the thing they are asking for is literally impossible.

It was pretty maddening at times, but I guess in a way I do miss having to get creative and try to read the minds of those that want a particular thing but can’t say what it is

I’d say a lot of the appeal comes from the fact that there are so many things that to an expert *are* crystal clear in the way that simple line relations are, but even an otherwise logical person who doesn’t know what the rules are can be difficult to get to acknowledge that there’s a problem. From the perspective of He Who Draws lines, it’s as if everybody else is speaking Dumbese on purpose.

As someone who actually draws lines for a living (AutoCAD), I am speaking, of course, of the Sales Department.

Funny, just yesterday I attended a seminar on c urriculum design that dealt with ways to better integrate our basic science teaching with clinical practice. One of the tenets that was discussed is that becoming an expert (professor) in your field fundamentally changes your perception of that field such that you can no longer see it from the perspective one the novice (student) without a lot of effort.

I struggle with the plant manager because he often wants a specific thing that is a good idea , but he doesn’t communicate the way in which it is possible. He’s not stupid by any means, and he probably has a better three-dimensional grasp of the units we design (as he has dictated their design for decades), but getting out of him how he wants something done...

The only thing worse than somebody with a different communication set trying to divine a set of design parameters is when those parameters are getting washed through two levels of non-communication. Requirement->design intent -> desig... wait, what did you say?

I used to draw 3d parts in wireframe and print them to pdf in wireframe. I was hated for it, because I could see the shape and the person who had to use the drawing couldn’t. I couldn’t *unsee* the shape, because I’d drawn it and never *not* known how it went together...

It was a good thing that I discovered several easy hacks for making things out of prismatic blocks instead.

I was thinking of this very thing today. We had a meeting. The Client asked us to reduce our overall effort so they could stretch our budget through the end of the fiscal year. We spent the next 45 minutes trying to figure out ways to “optimize” our efforts so The Client could still benefit from our work but not have to pay as much. Then another of The Client’s minions came into the meeting and asked us to do MORE WORK. The Client agreed that the MORE WORK needed to be done and told us to move forward with  MORE WORK. I’m sure that when the invoice arrives, someone is going to realize that MORE WORK costs MORE MONEY, the very thing The Client was trying to get us to spend less of.
